Open Source Life: Subversion, a revision control system (part 2.5 of 3)

Part 5 is here. I’ve been having problems with my free hosting at openomy, but no matter I now have my own server running. When I get Apache up and running, I’ll host my stuff over there. For now, the video below comes directly from YouTube. Bad quality, but still does the job.

I recommend viewing this video in full screen (click the icon to the left of the volume button).

I use subversion not just to track multiple versions of my files, but I find that some sort of version control software like this is critical for collaboration. I host my subversion repository on a server, so that many of us can link to it, and I can link to it from many computers. The system keeps track of the changes made. It’s absolutely critical to avoid overwriting people’s work, keeping a safe copy, and essentially making sure nothing gets lost.

  2. James,

That’s a great point, and thank you for taking the time to add it. Technology has gotten to the point where the previously more “geeky” applications could easily be adopted in more mainstream uses, if only people were to know about them and have a chance to use them.

I’m assuming you use Subversion for more than just source code?

  4. Greg,

Thanks! I always hope that stuff like this is useful for people, and it’s nice to be reassured of that.

You probably caught part 6a and 6b, they should be up on YouTube by now, and I’m going to cross-link them here.

Before doing any more screencasts of any type, I’m going to set-up my other server to host the higher quality flash videos. I really like the service YouTube provides, but the quality of their video conversion is awful for videos like this.
