Late last year, around October or November of 2006, I opened up my mailbox and pitched a fit. I check my email like an adolescent boy waiting for his secret love to return his phone call. I check my snail mail, on average, every 2 days. I opened up the mailbox to the biggest stack of holiday junkmail I’d ever seen. Stuck inside the junkmail, to no fault of the mail carrier whose job it is to delivery things addressed to me, was an important bill. Had I not actually looked through the junkmail, I would have tossed the bill.
I had it at that point and went on a crusade to get ride of the crap that shows up in my inbox. Did a search on Google for how to do this. Turns out there isn’t just a nationwide sign - this - webpage - and - we’ll - put - you - on - the - do - not - mail - list. Annoying. What I did find was a company called Greendimes. I liked how they work. I pay them a bit of money. They stop the junkmail. They plant trees. A restorative, sustainable business. I like it.
To date, it’s estimated that they have stopped 404,000 pounds of junkmail. This directly translates to 159,000 trees still living (including the trees they’ve replanted) and 1,000,000 gallons of water saved
I still get an occasional piece of junk mail from somebody new who gets my name from somewhere, but my inbox has not been full of junk since.
If you have enough time to get rid of junkmail on your own, more power to you and I applaud your effort to improve the environment. If you are looking to get rid of junkmail, and you don’t have the time to do it yourself, I’d highly recommend using their service.
(I also just read this. If you don’t want to go to the link, in summary it says that they are donating part of their profits towards the purchase of mosquito - bed - tents. This mosquito protection will be donated to those in need in malaria high-risk areas.)
